James Sedgwick
Sedgwick & Shingles · Los Victrolas · James Sedgwick and the Revelators
At thirteen, surgery on both eyes forced him to stay at home for a long stretch, unable to read, watch television or play any game or sport, with music left as his only entertainment: “I started listening to all the records there were in my house, including one my father had by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, which fascinated me.” The harmonica his father gave him to pass the time led him to the blues for ever. At the beginning of the 2000s, his family moved to Nicaragua, from where they eventually had to flee, and James settled in Barcelona in 2018 to join the local scene, where he has become a familiar and much-loved figure. A deep connoisseur of the genre, he is seduced by its powerful and direct capacity to communicate and he acknowledges that, personally, it is much more than a style that allows him to develop his art: “It has given me a broad love of music and a path to navigate through life. It is something that has never left me and a constant source of exploration, learning and joy.”
