Santi Ursul was part of the group of restless pioneers who climbed onto the small stage of La Cova del Drac in the early days of Barcelona’s blues, in the early eighties, and he opened La Boîte, the venue that suckled the first bands during the nineties. This is the period in which Ursul became a professional and began “to live (or barely live) solely and exclusively from music”. Like many others of his time, he discovered the blues when he was a boy, in the seventies, through British bands such as Cream and the Rolling Stones, and ended up plunging into a seduction with overtones of abduction, or, put in his own words: “It isn’t that it seduces me, it’s that without the blues nothing I have played, play and will play makes sense. It is the mother of all the genres that have come since. It seduces me completely.” With more than three decades carrying the pulse of his bass across stages, with legendary and current bands on the Barcelona scene, this musician, usually shielded by a pair of sunglasses, has become an indispensable figure in the local history of rock and blues, a music that, by his own confession, has given him life.
