Ster Wax
The Sparkles · Ster and the Waxers · Wax & Boogie
It happened on a night in 2011 in one of the city’s most emblematic clubs, the Rocksound. A young singer was presenting herself at the SBB competition with a band put together for the occasion with the best of each house. Ster did not win, but she did make the definitive leap into professionalism. With a striking voice, an image that transports you back to the glory days of rhythm & blues and a dazzling ease on stage, in a decade she went from a chorus in burlesque shows to top-billed performer, becoming one of the finest female voices in the country. Precociously famed on stage, she began singing with a female doo-wop group, then formed Ster and The Waxers, took part in Burlesque Taboo and finally consolidated Wax & Boogie alongside the pianist David Giorcelli. Her secret weapon, by her own admission, is “the ability to turn the stage into my own home, or at least to convey that”. Sincere, demanding and hard-working, she manages to win the audience over by putting her whole soul into the music she performs and by seeking out the roots in a range of classics that runs from Ruth Brown to Mose Allison, by way of Etta James, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, among the hundreds of musicians who shape the artistic universe of this singer.
