Session held in Barcelona on: 01/06/2021
Xavi Curto
Hot Blues · The Midnight Rockets · Els Impossibles · Firewood Band
This efficient musician and prestigious professional stumbled upon the blues when he landed in Cerdanyola: “It was a city dominated by music and at that time everything breathed blues, it was inevitable.” After completing his studies at the Taller de Músics he began to perform regularly, becoming an indissoluble part of a second generation of the blues in the Barcelona area, which took up the baton from the pioneers of the previous generation, and he has shared the stage with most of the great names on the national scene. For this veteran and forceful bassist, African-American roots music provides creative and communicative freedom: “It is the music that, together with jazz, gives you the most freedom of interpretation and the greatest ease in connecting with people’s feelings and moods.” A fine connoisseur of the genre and a regular figure on the Barcelona scene, he has played with most of the local bands and with a good number of international stars on their visits to the city. As a good blues bassist, his reference is Willie Dixon, one of the greatest in a music that has allowed him to express his personality and which, moreover, in Curto’s own words, “is a well you never reach the bottom of”.
